User Generated Content to Create New CNN Show
CNN have introduced a new show called News To Me:
“News To Me” is the world as YOU see it. Your videos, pictures and stories showcased in an original, fast-paced and interactive show debuting on Headline News on Saturday, May 19. “News To Me” is your show, so send your videos and pictures. In addition to CNN.com I-Report content, the show will also feature videos from Blip.tv , Jumpcut.com , Revver.com and ThePalestra.com. Source.
The show is a nice example of user generated content making its way into the mainstream media. I have no idea what the show itself is like, but it speaks volumes that CNN would give 2 hours per schedule week to this content. [As an aside, I would have thought that CNN’s Yahoo! driven site search would be a bit better.]
Online, Offline – less and less of a difference?
Again, the main thing I take from this is the blurring of media channels – Internet content is fast making its way onto off-line channels. And how long will it take before those off-line channels become part of the Internet anyway?
As a final thought – can you imagine the RTE version? Responses on a postcard please to…
First of all great to see you back blogging Richard.
If it takes off, I’d say CNN will have a hard time filtering out all the useless stuff (akin to what’s on YouTube). I guess the editing effort would be quite high.
In the age of HDTV, I guess this would be a step back in terms of quality ? At least right now, and with CNN’s 30MB upload cap.
As for what RTÉ would put in : maybe something like this

Hi Paul
I think they edit the show as they would any other. But I imagine there is a good saving on production costs.
Quality will only be bound by bandwidth, and in the long run the costs of bandwidth will tend toward zero so this shouldn’t be an issue.
I was going to take a look at your RTE suggestion – alas YouTube is still banned in Thailand… [and believe it or not quite a bit of the Internet is off bounds to the Thai Internet user].
Thanks for commenting, rgds
Richard

Think Current TV – http://uk.current.com – on Sky Digital has that working (in some form).
Google seems to have really bought into it too – with their own daily ‘programmes’!
