Google detection still doesn't see the worst paid links / paid blog posts / link networks. They may be getting better, but, woah, have they got a lot of junk still to catch…

It depends.
Knowing and Acting are 2 different things – and often G only seems to act under very set conditions.
The sad thing is – G are menat to read the Spam Reports – so they "know" … and if they go look, they should take some action.

I find it hard to believe some of those where missed during Penguin considering how bad they are…

Car rental is also a dodgy space. One company I looked at last week had 10+ doorway sites and domains.

I might know a thing or 3 about the car hire space… Yes it's very spammy.

I hear ya Richard, I can only hope the penguin update picks these up, I seriously doubt it will tho. It makes preaching an ethical approach to seo very difficult and there are not many patient clients.
