As Google keeps pushing back against content owners, you have to think (hope?) that more and more publishers are getting closer to saying "enough is enough". By removing all referral data from all but paid search it's clear that Google cares nothing about content owners. At the same time Google spouts crap about doing this for searchers, who's data is safe and protected now, unless of course advertisers are willing to pay for it.
The day will come when site owners either:
a) no longer care about Google as it becomes an "also-ran"
b) decide to block Google all together AND remove their site from Google's index (I would so love for some big names to block Google…)
Many of the greatest companies in history died not at the hands of competitors, but instead failed due to their own poor decisions. History has a funny habit of repeating itself. Go Google, go.
